This video covers a cultural project completed by Movement of Urban Transformation & Art (MUTA) and Una Mano Para Oaxaca together with the community of Ixtaltepec, Mexico, in November 2019.
A member of the MUTA creative collective, I visited Ixtaltepec in order to become acquainted with its cultural influencers and produce this video about our public art project — designed to return color to the streets of Ixtaltepec.
In 2017 Ixtaltepec suffered a devastating earthquake that leveled nearly 80 percent of the town. As part of its process to rebuild, Una Mano Para Oaxaca has overseen initiatives for reconstruction, as well as a more recent artistic efforts to celebrate the area’s rich culture.
We worked hand-in-hand with the community to design and paint a mural depicting the town’s unique symbols. This mural is one of many throughout the town that honor the area’s history, culture and craftsmanship. Beside our mural hangs a map of the town’s new murals.
