First Favorite Places in Buenos Aires

During my first two weeks in Buenos Aires, I lived like an empanada-eating vagabond and did nothing more than check off my list of must-see museums, parks, cafes and city landmarks.

Here’s the shortlist.

MALBA

striking modern Latin American art

Parque Tres de Febrero

rose garden within the park

Anima Cupcakes, admittedly no longer a brick-and-mortar cafe (but they cater!). Instead, check out Artemesia Cocina Natural for similar plant-laden prettiness and a more robust menu.

RIP, you little beauty of a cafe

Cementerio de la Recoleta

the swankiest neighborhood in town

El Ateneo Grand Splendid

theater turned bookstore

La Cabrera

that time we ate steak until 2 a.m.

Feria de San Telmo

clothes, things and all sorts of stuff

Calle Caminito

de colores en La Boca

I was a tourist in my new town, walking at least five miles a day and exploring its streets like the eager little yanqui I am. In the midst of it, I wrote a Buenos Aires starter pack for The Bubble, an online English newspaper geared toward expats. The article guides newbies through the overwhelming and often disorienting process of moving to a new country. The fact that I wrote a guide is amusing to me now — because I was absolutely making it up as I went along.
